What is Vaginal Atrophy?

Vaginal atrophy is a syndrome that is caused due to dryness in the vagina along with inflammation and thinning of the vaginal walls.

Millions of postmenopausal women may have this syndrome. 65% of women do not realize that they have this chronic disorder.

Why does Vaginal Atrophy Occur?

As we know estrogen levels are an important component in a woman’s sexual development, skin health, and tissue health in the body.

A decrease in the Estrogen level will lead to vaginal atrophy.

A woman with irregular periods or taking medications may possibly have this disorder as well.

What may cause estrogen levels to decrease?

 Breastfeeding

Lack of enough lubricant during intercourse

Lack of libido

Use of birth control pills

Removal of both the ovaries

Diabetes

Post-chemotherapy

Some other crucial factors to look into:

A lack of sexual activity tightens the vaginal tissues. Women who do not deliver through their vagina have more chances of atrophic vaginitis.

Smoking damages the entire blood flow in the body and reduces the estrogen levels leading to early menopause.
